A 19TH CENTURY GOLD AND ENAMEL PRESENTATION SNUFF BOX, HANAU, C. 1830 Antique 19th Century German 18 carat gold and enamel snuff box, rectangular form, the hinged cover with blue enamelled panel depicting two cherubs among scrolling foliage, the sides and the underside also decorated with blue enamel with stylized bands.
The interior bearing Pseudo-marks (tested shows 18 carat gold) and Maker's mark for Sochay & Colin, important goldsmith active in Hanau, Germany, in the early 19th century. The box dates before 1831.
The interior bearing an important memorial inscription relating to the commander of the "11th Light Dragoon": "I. S. Chapman Esq.re Ass. Surgeon 11th Light Dragoon from his sincere Friend and Commanding Officer Lt Colonel N. Brutton, Jan 2nd 1831".
