Philippe-Joseph Brocard was one of the most important glass makers of the 19th century, and one of the first to revive the Islamic enamelling techniques apparent in this rare bowl. He exhibited at many of the Great Exhibitions of the 19th century including the Paris Universelle Exposition of 1867, where a number of vessels by him decorated in this style were shown. Brocard's work was subsequently shown at the 1873 Vienna World's Fair and 1878 Paris Exposition. Fascinated by the Mamluk mosque lamps in the Musee de Cluny, Paris, he began to collect them himself and thus had models close at hand to study. Mosque lamps were luxury objects for hanging in mosques and mausolea and were the most spectacular achievements of enamelled glass from Mamluk Egypt and Syria from the twelfth to the fourteenth centuries.

Signed with Japanese characters and makers mark M.S for The Musashiya Company.

Footnote:
The Musashiya Company, created by Ozeki Yahei and under the aegis of his son Sadajiro, became perhaps the most successful of the concerns selling high-quality decorative art during the Meiji period. Sadajiro’s openness to collaborate with enterprises such as Liberty of London enthused him to work with some of the finest Japanese artists and artisans.
Many of these items happened to be spoons, but spoons that were each a work of art. Some he marked Musashiya, while others he decided to mark with the initials “S.M.”, the latter created out of Sadajiro and Musashiya. Many of these spoons were actually creations of some of Japan’s most-notable artisans exclusively at the Musashiya workshops, for more information please read Chinese export silver: The Yokohama Conundrum, by Adrien Von Ferscht.
